Niton XL5

In my lab we have a Portable X-Ray Fluorescence Niton XL5 that has been configured to analyze soils for heavy metals. For my research I use this tool to make sure we are digging in safe conditions, but also to analyze soils from my archaeological sites for evidence of historic toxins. I am also beginning to use this PXRF as part of citizen science project to help remediate local gardens within the Pioneer Valley. If any industrial archaeologists or historical archaeologists are interested in knowing about the presence of historic heavy metals in their soils feel free to email me at hestewart@umass.edu.
